Community outreach
Lancaster Area Search & Rescue is proud to support our local community and offer a Community Outreach programme which see’s our volunteers give talks and presentations at schools, clubs and local community groups and centres. We can offer talks suited to a range of audiences, from fun and interactive show and tell sessions for children, to more in depth water awareness training created for adult groups. Our qualified instructors are also able to teach the DEFRA Level 1 Water Awareness Course which teaches participants more about the dangers of open water and is a nationally recognised qualification.
LASAR also supports the Royal Life Saving Society Drowning Prevention week which is held in June each year. Drowning Prevention Week is a campaign designed to help everyone in the UK learn more about the dangers of water and how to respond if they believe somebody is drowning. Each year, LASAR takes an interactive Drowning Prevention Week workshop into schools and local youth groups around the Lancaster area, and also hosts fun and educational activities during Drowning Prevention Week at our weekly Young Lifesavers Club.

LASAR has a close relationship with the Morecambe Bay Food Bank who during the onset of the 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic required our assistance to help create a temporary large scale food distribution centre at Salt Ayre Leisure centre. During this time we have assisted in all aspects of their incredible service, from collecting donations, to building vital food parcels, and to delivering food parcels to those who need them in the Bay area. Since the set up of the initial distribution point, we have helped move the entire Food Bank operation to two further distribution centres, the last of which is now situated on Westgate in Morecambe. A number of our volunteers still give up their own time to assist the Food Bank every week.
You will also find LASAR volunteers working within many other community initiatives, such as local Youth Clubs and Scout Groups, COVID Testing Centres, NHS COVID Vaccination Centres and operating as Community First Responders for the North West Ambulance Service.
